Early in 2001 I was suddenly spending a lot of time in supermarkets. About the same time there was a story in the news about a man that had been convicted of assault on baked goods. The surreal nature of that story got me thinking. Supermarkets are the ultimate cultural melting pot. Almost every profession and ethnicity has been involved in the evolution of the supermarket. Manufacturers will compete for eye level positioning and who decided that shopping carts(trolleys) were the perfect ad space for funeral homes?. Much has been made of how many people in contemporary society no longer define themselves by their physical attributes, education, home town etc. but by the brands they have now chosen to identify with. This notion combined with a list of oxymoronic product promises made with unpronounceable chemicals, somehow fueled a need to my pile groceries on top of a video camera and create Generic.
